After a first start that showed so much promise for a return to form for San Diego Padres starting pitcher Chris Young, the team announced Friday that he will miss his his next start due to tightness in his right throwing shoulder.
Young was brilliant in his opening start on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Manager Bud Black pulled Young after just 86 pitches with the Padres in control of the game with a 5-0 lead. His early departure was not related to any problems with his shoulder, but rather trying to ease Young in on starting day.
Black said Young started to feel the tightness on Wednesday after his start. Young had made his first outing since June 14, 2009 and had surgery in the summer to repair loose fragments in his shoulder.
Young has not made 30 starts since his impressive season in 2007 where he pitched 173 innings with a 3.12 ERA and held opposing batters to just a .192 average.
He was slated to face the Atlanta Braves on Monday, who will now go with RHP Kevin Correia.
