The Washington Nationals placed outfielder Austin Kearns on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
Kearns has a contusion on his right thumb and is on his way to Baltimore to see a specialist. Reports are that the Nationals may shut him down for the rest of the season.
It has been a tough season for Kearns, who is hitting just .195 with three home runs in 174 at bats. His playing time had been reduced recently, and has started in just five games since the start of July.
To take Kearns place on the roster, the Nationals called up Jorge Padilla from AAA-Syracuse. Padilla, a 29 year old outfielder who has never played in the major leagues, was hitting .362 with four home runs and 21 RBI for the Chiefs.
