The Oakland Athletics acquired Scott Hairston from the Padres on Monday for a pair of minor league prospects and a player to be named later.

Hairston, who was hitting .299 with 10 home runs and 8 stolen bases in 197 at-bats with San Diego, is expected to start in center field for the Athletics. According to Oakland assistant general manager David Forst, Hairston was a player that the Athletics had valued for some time and had pursued him since his days with the Diamondbacks.

The move may also allow them to move star outfielder Matt Holiday before the trade deadline.

The San Diego Padres recieved minor leaguers Ryan Webb and Craig Italiano as well as a player to be named later. Webb, 23, is a right handed starter turned reliever is 7-1 with a 4.34 ERA in 45.2 innings with AAA-Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League.

Italiano, who is 22 years old, was 5-6 with a 5.63 ERA in single-A Stockton.
